A few of you were wondering why we’re starting school so early. Believe it or not, the public schools in our area are starting back the end of this week. It seems like the summer break gets shorter each year, at least here in the South. By starting our school year now, I have until the end of next July to complete our work in order to meet our state’s requirements for homeschooling. This leaves us with lots of flexibility! I usually take off almost the entire month of December. We also will take time off here and there throughout the year for special days, trips to Florida, or when company comes a-callin’.
One of the best things about homeschooling is the FREEDOM that comes from planning the school year around our family’s needs and schedule. We love it! I’ll probably be blogging a lot about school since that’s what will be filling a large part of my day. Hopefully you won’t be bored to tears with all the school stuff.
This picture was taken this morning as we headed out the door for school. We now have a 4th grader, 2nd grader, kindergartener, and pre-schooler–whew!
It started to rain in the middle of our picture taking (of course!). We were thankful that we didn’t have very far to walk to get to school. Our one room schoolhouse is located in our backyard. This is an old picture of it. We’ve spent the summer converting it from a storage shed to a schoolhouse. We still need to finish the floors and install the A/C, so I’m saving the official schoolhouse tour until those projects are completed.
The kids were so happy with their new school supplies and folders. You would have thought it was Christmas morning! Lil’ Nut carried her Care Bears folder around with her all morning. The older kids spent the morning working on review exercises and familiarizing themselves with our little library. It’s been stocked with some of their favorite books that have still been in boxes since we moved two years ago. There were lots of squeals heard as they were reunited with these “old friends”. Curly Girl was so excited about starting kindergarten that she fluttered all morning; she flutters her arms like a little bird whenever she’s beside herself with joy. She was a little bit disappointed that she wasn’t reading and writing by lunchtime.:) It thrills my heart to see her so eager to learn.
All in all, I’d say we had a great first day even though I wasn’t quite as organized as I had planned to be; there are too many teacher’s manuals and lesson plans to keep straight. I’m going to sleep like a baby tonight. The first day of school is harder on Mom than on the kids.
I for one will not get tired of hearing of school related posts. I too plan to post alot of school day activity as we will be doing the Prairie Primer. I KNOW my quilting/daily life blog friends would tire of it so I actually started a blog just for that purpose! Your blog is the perfect setting to share your school days, mine was not.
Oh gosh! I forgot to mention how adorable everyone was on their first day of school. What a wonderful school house you have! I will share this post with my kids! Love those brand new folders!

Thanks for your sweet comment. We homeschooling moms never get tired of hearing (or reading) about the lives of other homeschoolers. 🙂
Feel free to pop in anytime.

Your schoolroom is adorable. I can’t wait for more photos of it. The kids are pretty cute too!
I moved almost two years ago, and still have boxes of books, folders, resources out in my garage somewhere. One day…
Have fun at school tomorrow!

Best wishes on your new school year!
Sounds like a great start to me. Anytime you can have such eager students it means a job well done heading into it.

Your students looks so happy and eager to learn! I remember so clearly the days when I was a child I got to pick out a “special” new folder. It just goes to show those little things really do mean a lot! Your schoolroom looks absolutely adorable and I can’t wait to see more pictures;o)
Oh, how fun to have such an adorable little schoolhosue..I love it!! Congratulations on your first day of school!
I just really really love the schoolhouse. I’m not coveting…but if the only way I could have one like that was to take yours, I would. LOL
Love the pic of the kids on the steps. That’s a great shot of them.
Oh, I wish I could smell your classroom right now — I LOVE the smell of new books, LOL! I’m sure you all will have a wonderful year 🙂
Exciting times ;o]
I am not really a large advocate for homeschooling (a long story that i won’t get into here) but WOW…good for you!!!!!! you make it wonderful for your children and your separate “school” is the first time i have ever seen anything like that, and i think it is just great! up here in NYS my girls will go back 3 days after labor day so we are still in vacation mode here. Your children are adorable and I can’t wait to tell my friends here about your school. This made my day!
Here’s to another fun filled year of learning. I like the idea of all the children posing for a class photo; they look so cute.
How cool! I’d love to have a separate school house to work in. Alas, that isn’t possible for our family but we do enjoy the kitchen table!
